The Department of Medicine consists of a group of devoted clinician-educators, with a full-time faculty of over 50 and a private part-time faculty of over 75. The residents interact with our faculty daily both on wards and in clinics, and we strongly promote one-on-one education. Our faculty serve as leaders in their respective fields and are engaged in numerous scholarly activities. His special interests include immunotherapy and the care of patients with renal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. He was named the director of medicine clinics and associate chairman in 1980. In 1982, he joined Charlotte Medical Clinic; in 1994, he rejoined the faculty as the program director. Our residency program accepts applications through the AAMC’s Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and we also participate in the National Residency Matching Program. ERAS collects the required materials and then transmits these documents from your medical school to our residency program.
Our application deadline is Dec. 31; however, we strongly encourage applicants to submit their applications by the end of October since our interview schedule fills quickly. While Deans’ letters are not released until Nov. 1, we begin reviewing applications that are otherwise complete in late September and will begin notifying applicants of interviews as applications are reviewed. USMLE Board score results We do not require any materials beyond those to be submitted to ERAS and we ask that you do not send any additional material unless we request them from you directly. USMLE & COMLEX Scores We expect that applicants will have passed USMLE or COMLEX Step I before applying. Step II and Step II-CS passage is required to enter the program, and therefore passing these exams before applying is strongly suggested. Candidates from Osteopathic Medical Schools should submit COMLEX scores, and may submit USMLE scores in addition but this is not required. Clinical Experience We encourage graduates of international medical schools (IMG) to submit letters of recommendation from mentors within the U.S.

FAQs What is the timeline for your interview process?
We conduct interviews during the months of November through January, with appropriate breaks for the holidays. We begin to review applications starting October 1 when MSPE (Dean’s Letters) are formally released, and invitations are sent throughout October and November. Our interview slots for the year generally fill by December 1. For your planning, it is very unlikely that you will receive an interview offer after December 1st if you have not already been offered a slot or a place on the waiting list. To respect your time and interests, we do strive to e-mail all candidates regarding their status by December 1st. This communication will come through the ERAS System.
Which visa types does your program accept? We accommodate J1 visas. Do you accept applications from Foreign and/or International Graduates (FMG/IMG)? We are proud of our diverse applicant pool and give full consideration to FMG/IMG candidates in our process. FMG/IMG Candidates who have successfully matched to our program in recent years have generally graduated from medical school within the past three years, have USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK scores at least in the 230’s, successfully passed Step 2 CS on the first attempt, and have at least 3 months of clinical activity in the United States (ideally “hands on” clinical rotations).
These are general guidelines meant to help inform our applicants. We are willing to give consideration to candidates who don’t meet all these criteria, case by case, on the basis of other outstanding attributes or accomplishments in the field. Do you offer any pre-Match positions? No, we fill all positions through the Match. Does your institution/program offer observerships or externships? Information on the Allegheny International observership program is available. Observers may be placed in rotations on specialty (consult) services within the Department of Medicine depending on availability. Observers are also welcome to attend resident didactic conferences.
We regret that we are unable to accommodate observers on our general medicine inpatient services or clinics, and cannot grant requests for one-on-one meetings with the program director. What university affiliation does the program have? We are affiliated with Temple University School of Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine, and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
