Roger Stelljes is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling mystery author who has written the “McRyan Mystery” series; his series about Michael McKenzie “Mac” McRyan. The novels in the series have been downloaded over two million times around world, onto many different devices. He practices law full time and writes in his free time, when not busy watching hockey. He likes reading a lot of books and watching a lot of sports, mainly those played by the Golden Gophers (college hockey), Twins (professional baseball), Wild (professional hockey), and the Vikings (professional football). All of these are Minnesota based teams.

As a lawyer, he worked at the Arthur Chapman firm practicing law there for three years. Currently, he works and is a shareholder at McGrann, Shea, Carnival, Straughn, and Lamb, a different law firm.

Paul Conspiracy” is the first book in the “McRyan Mystery” series. The first of November in St. Paul and finds that a serial killer is killing blue collar women that work on University Avenue.

With this latest victim, this killer has killed five women now, and it has put the citizens of St. Paul on edge. Michael McKenzie “Mac” McRyan, a Homicide Detective in St. Paul, he is not working the case and so he would have less stress that day. Then his phone rings.

It is a murder victim and the victim is big. Claire Daniels is her name, and she is a highly prominent investigative and political reporter. The pressure really starts to build with the now six murders from the media. The investigation puts Mac in a tough spot, looking into a case that has security and political implications.

Fans of the novel liked the fast pace and some of the romance elements in it. Some readers found themselves wanting more entries from this writer. Some readers enjoyed the thrill ride that Stelljes takes them on, and the novel is full of developed characters, a wicked plot. These three things make the readers want to read the novel faster and faster, and that the novel had a simply amazing story and some great plot twists. Some found that the cops in the novel were very human and acted like real humans often do. Some readers did not like the novel and found some parts to be a little tedious and that the author shows more than he tells about some things.

Some found the novel to be just contrived and that it was just like an amateur had written it. Some found that the editing in the novel was a little poor that made them look for errors and not enjoy the book more. “Deadly Stillwater” is the second book in the “McRyan Mystery” series. McRyan is the fourth generation in his family to be cop. He is on a case that starts out as the abduction of two women but goes a lot further than that, and involves betrayal and revenge that strikes the St. Paul police at their core. The details of the abduction involve a bold kidnapping, a media storm, and political scrutiny to it.

There is not a lot of time to find the two women for Mac as everything comes down on him. Fans of the novel found that Mac was a great hero with a great mind and the author has drawn them into a great ride from the first page.

Some found that they were on the edge of their seat the whole time they were reading it, and were amazed the whole time. Some found that even if they did not like series books, that they enjoyed these books due to the fact that they are very self contained novels that do not require you to buy more and more novels, just to get one full story. Some fans found that he was as good as some of the other mystery and thriller writers, but Stelljes does not have as much exposure as the other guys do. Some readers did not like the novel because it felt too long, and repetitive in certain parts, and unrealistic. Some found the novel to be nothing but a predictable ride and gets nothing but more boring.

Some found that the novel has bad development and over use of certain phrases as well as bad language. “Electing To Murder” is the third book in the “McRyan Mystery” series. There is a late night meeting in Kentucky and a murder in a crummy St. Paul motel room. All of this gives Mac a lot to work through on this case. There is also an ex-FBI agent named Dara Wire who is trailing the Democratic candidate for the Republican candidate’s campaign manager who is a slimy man who knows every dirty trick that there is.

His girlfriend is involved in the case, and Mac finds himself wanting to protect her if he can. Some fans like the way that Stelljes writes dialogue- for how real and gritty that it is, and the way that he puts the reader right in the middle of everything (all the action) that shows the cops (both Mac and his fellow detectives) in desperate situations.

Some found that the presidential election angle made for a great thing to drive things story wise. Some found themselves rooting for Mac and found that they wanted to read more novels about this detective. Fans were intrigued with this one, and stumped, too, not knowing who the killer was until Stelljes tells them who it is. Some readers did not like the way that the author seems to only show the good side of the character Mac and seems not to have a single flaw to him at all. Some found the premise in the novel to be revolting to them.

Others found that the typos in the novel really kept it from being readable, and they were actually re-writing the parts with typos in their head. Even though the novels stand alone, it is recommended that they be read in order, even the novella that comes before the first novel in the series. At first I though First Case, was about a mafia family due to the reference of 'family business'. However, this was not the case, 'family business' refers to law enforcement family. I am impressed with the way Roger Stelljes portrays his characters. Readers of First Case will learn about how to be it feels to be a new detective and how to win over your work colleagues. Also, readers will learn that you can not keep a secret in the workplace, you are always eventually found out.

I recommend this book. Michael McKenzie “Mac” McRyan had it all. A former University of Minnesota Gopher hockey player, he was a good-looking law school graduate married to a beautiful lawyer. They had money, a big house, and an auspicious future. Then two of his cousins, police officers in a long line of McRyan cops, were killed in the line of duty, and Mac gave up his promising legal career to follow in his late father’s footsteps and become a homicide detective.

I first hit upon this author when I noted that he is a Minnesotan, and I am always interested in local writers. I don’t find his writing as stimulating or compelling as a couple of my other favorite Minnesota authors, I think his storytelling is solid, his characters convincing, and his plots entertaining. First Case is Mac’s initiation into homicide investigation after four years as a street cop. Is it realistic that he is given full reign on his first case and that his instincts are dead on? Maybe, maybe not. He is definitely given the benefit of the doubt because of his genealogy. His dad was practically a saint in the department.

When a hard-working, hard-playing lawyer is found dead in the alley behind a bar, Mac and his partner start asking questions. Is the killer someone related to his law cases, or is he an angry husband or boyfriend? Stelljes kept me guessing as Mac went back and forth, examining all angles.

There are some personal issues in this book as well. I was somewhat surprised by the level of emotion – I would have expected more, considering the circumstances.

But First Case is primarily a police procedural, and the writing is straightforward with a well-constructed plot. The solution was unexpected, if a bit unrealistic. I give the author points for creativity, however. If you’re looking for a quick read on a Sunday afternoon, pick up First Case. Mac McRyan is worth getting to know. I am one of those readers who can't start a series at the second or third book.

I have to read them in order if I know previous books in the series exist. First Case was written after the first book in the McRyan mystery series but I hadn't discovered the author yet, so I started with the first short story.

What I liked: Since I had no expectations and short stories are well, short; I really enjoyed the background on the protaganist, Michael McRyan (known as 'Mac'). I had never read a 3.5 Stars!!!

All of this came about because the third book in the series came to my attention as a free Kindle deal, before I rush in to obtain a free book, I now do my homework. I went crazy with free offerings when I first received my Kindle and was very disappointed in some of my book deals. Now, I research before I click the 'get it free' button. Mac is written as a very idealistic character but extremely savvy.

(He also has a law degree, which the book explains why he's not a lawyer. He's extremely smart and picks up on the slightest clues. The thing I enjoyed most was the characters thought process and sense of fairness. In addition, Mac is a bulldog when he gets the bit between his teeth. I also really enjoyed the secondary characters, Mac's partner, Richard Lich (Dick Lick) and the Police captain and commissioner are solidly behind their cops. What I didn't like: It's hard to find something in such a short book not to like especially if the author is halfway decent writer.

So, yeah, I just enjoyed the book. I'm extremely glad I read First Case before starting the series as the background on Mac and his thought process is critical to the series. Recommended - start with this one before the first full length novel, The St Paul Conspiracy.

I have to start of by saying that usually when I read these short stories that authors put out, I hate them. To me they seem to be the author trying to make a quick buck. That being said, I really liked this short novella in the Michael 'Mac' McRyan series. Even though it was short, I thought it did a good job letting the story and mystery play out. It also gave us much more insight into Mac's first marriage and his history.

If you like a good old cops and robbers book, USA style, then you will probably enjoy this one. This is the first in a series, so you have others to follow it. Personally, I found the book ok but it wasn’t up to the standard of Earl Stanley Gardner, an American author of this genre who I have really enjoyed even though it was written back in the 30’s-50’s. I.seriously. hate when I finish typing a review, only to do a mysterious set of keystrokes that somehow push me back in my browsing history. Which completely removes my review!!! Think I found a new series to follow. The 2nd book in this series was offered as a free ebook on a site I get a lot of freebies from. So, as usual, I looked into the book and its reviews, discovered it to be part of a series that looked interesting, and bought the whole series. (Yes, I know, that's the I.seriously.

So, as usual, I looked into the book and its reviews, discovered it to be part of a series that looked interesting, and bought the whole series. (Yes, I know, that's the idea of offering the freebie, right?) But see, I'm a stickler for starting at the beginning of a series if at all possible; I hate reading book #3 and finding out about something that I wouldn't have known if I'd started at book #1. Or book #.5, in this case.

The main character, Michael 'Mac' McRyan is a 30-something lawyer turned policeman turned recent detective. This is his first case as a detective.

(Duh, the name!) Mac comes from a line of policemen, including his famous detective father. Mac decided he wanted to pursue the family business from the lawyer side, and he was about to go into private practice when two of his cousins, both policemen, were killed in the line of duty. Mac put aside his law career and became a policeman. He's now paired with Richard Lich (known as 'Dick Lick' to most), a veteran detective who has a bit extra around the middle and 2 bad divorces behind him. Dick is OK with working with Mac and even letting him take the lead, at times. In fact, everyone seems to like Mac, and it's not all because of his father or the family; I appreciated that.

The homicide victim is a young associate at a big law firm, who's known for two things: the hours he bills and the women he. The guy doesn't care if what the relationship status is of the women he 'dates', since the dates focus strictly on one thing. So there are a lot of potential suspects.

I really like that the author doesn't 'cheat' by keeping a key piece of evidence hidden or only talked about, as in, 'the detective balked when he saw X', and if we don't know what 'X' is, there's no way we can figure out whodunnit. Sure, there are plenty of red herrings and twists, even in this novella. But the readers discover things in almost real-time to Mac and his partner's discoveries.

There is every opportunity to 'solve' the whodunnit at the same time or slightly before. I really like that! And I especially like the dead lawyer's catch phrase about 'using everything tool in his toolbox' and how that plays into the solution. My only nit is more like a puzzlement to me. See, I spent from 9-18 growing up in rural Minnesota, which is now pretty much a suburb of the Twin Cities, even though the area is located 1 hour north. I grew up as a military brat and then as a police brat.

So I.know. that Minnesota and the Twin Cities are made up mostly of Germans and Swedes; yet the police force in this series seems to be made up mostly of Irish. OK, yes, things run in families. And perhaps it's only because of who is mentioned in the books, but I seem to be missing the Germans and Swedes on the force? Silly little thing. I don't mind that Mac is Irish, or that his father and family are mostly cops and retired cops.

Or that they run the local cop bar. All that makes sense.

I just wondered how the Chief and several of the 'key' policemen seem to be Irish in a predominantly German and Swedish place? Not a big deal, really - like I said, more like a puzzlement, especially since the author's last name appears to be Scandinavian in origin. But it can't be easy to write about your home town, try to avoid 'Mary Sue-ing', and keep everyone happy. So it's a pass. Definitely interested in this series. An easy entertaining murder mystery, just the way I like it. There are a couple of holes but noting to make it seem unrealistic.

The characters seem real though a little stereo-typed but aren't most. In short it is a very quick read as in 180 pages but next two are longer.
